What does the ICO want to see from a small business?

You want to comply with the legislation but as a small business it’s difficult to know what the ICO expects of you. To make your life easier, we have summarised what the ICO wants to see from small businesses and created a free downloadable guide to help you understand what steps you need to take…

As the UK regulator, the ICO oversees all aspects of data protection with a focus on protecting the rights of individuals over their own data. The ICO isn’t ‘out to get’ businesses – in fact contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t benefit financially from issuing fines and penalties. The ICO just wants to ensure that any business or organisation, large or small, that is processing personal information respects the rights of the individuals whose data it is.

With this in mind, we believe the ICO wants to see the following from small businesses:

ICON Transparency (002)

Transparency
The ICO wants you to make it easy for individuals to understand what data you hold, what you do with it, why you want to use it, how you protect it, and what rights those individuals have to control your use of their personal data.
ICON Risk (002)

Consideration of risks
The ICO wants to see clear evidence that you’ve identified the risks in your data processing and acted on your findings to safeguard sensitive data.
ICON Responsibilities (002)

Understanding of responsibilities
The ICO wants to see that all staff have received training in handling personal data have a basic understanding of their, and the organisation’s, responsibilities.
ICON Data SMALL

Clear approach to data management
The ICO wants to see clear evidence that you’ve identified the risks in your data processing and acted on your findings to safeguard sensitive data.
We have created a free downloadable guide looking at each of these in turn, identifying the steps you need to take and where you can find out more.
